What's in our Dry Mix? (Part 1 : Carbohydrates)

C A R B O H Y D R A T E S

(Grains & Cereals)

Rats are omnivores - granivores, which means that they rely on grains and seeds as their main source of nutrition. When deciding on a dry mix for your rats it's important that you keep this in mind.

Carbohydrates are necessary for energy. This food group should make up 75 - 80% of a rats diet, this consists of: Grains Cereals Legumes Vegetables* (some vegetables contain high levels of carbohydrates - it is important to be mindful of these when feeding)

-> Wholegrains 50% -> Processed/refined grains 20% -> Legumes 5% (*We have made allowances of an additional 5% carbohydrates in vegetables to make up the 80%)

Carbohydrates can be fed freely. Feeding a single carbohydrate from the following list might provide the necessary nutritional requirements for your rats. However, it is important to keep in mind that it's better to add more than one carbohydrate to your rats mix for variety, as each carbohydrate has different nutritional properties. A variety may also encourage foraging which, in turn, provides enrichment.
